Natural Materials and Period Features in a Restored Victorian House
This three-bedroom terraced house in the Bow’s Medway Conservation Area in London has been carefully renovated, creating open-plan interior spaces where period features meet a laid-back and natural interior style.
The original features and architecture of the Victorian house are paired with rustic wooden floorboards, natural materials, and a color palette of white, gray, and terracotta. The open-plan kitchen and dining area are magnificent, and large doors open to the patio garden, blurring the lines between indoors and outdoors.

The ground floor is largely open space, even though the sitting area at the front of the plan can be closed off with large wooden doors. The original timber floorboards run underfoot, adding a natural and rustic vibe to the living spaces.
Three large sash windows in a wide bay flood the living room with natural light.
The room features the original cornice and ceiling rosette, and it has a fireplace surround with moulded corbels and a shelf.
The walls in the living area are painted in “Cass” by Atelier Ellis.
The dining area is the center of the ground floor plan and features the same Victorian details as the sitting room.
A large rustic dining table with a bench and chairs stands in the center of the space. Glass doors open to the side patio.
At the back of the plan lies the modern kitchen with simple white cabinet doors, a display shelf, and Corian countertops.
Grid-laid terracotta tiles lie underfoot and continue into the outdoor patios, blending indoors with the outdoors, especially when the glass doors are opened.
The master bedroom lies at the front of the plan, featuring three round-headed sash windows. Wardrobes have been fitted on either side of the bed, and a headboard has been created using the same joinery for a harmonious look.
The two other bedrooms have windows facing the patio gardens. One of the rooms is now used as a sewing room.
The bathroom is small but stylish, featuring square tiles from Domus, Douglas fir joinery, and a Hanex countertop. The bathtub is fitted with a rainfall showerhead and brass fittings.
The house has a traditional facade made of stock brick and stucco. The stucco is painted in ‘Paper and String’ by Atelier Ellis.
The house is listed for £1,150,000 at The Modern House.
