Rustic Wooden Elements in a Historic English House
On a characterful medieval street in the English county, Kent stands a charming home with exposed timber. Originally one large townhouse, the 15th-century building was divided into two houses, and it was re-fronted in the 18th century.
The interiors are warm with plenty of wooden elements such as exposed wooden beams, rustic wooden floorboards, and raw wooden doors. The ground floor has been modernized with a more open-plan living space, but the historic character of the building remains.
Under the double gable roof are five bedrooms and an extra sitting room. And at the back is a charming private garden.
The social kitchen sits at the back of the house with access to the courtyard garden. The rooms have been opened up to create an open-plan kitchen and dining room.
Contemporary steel-faced kitchen units flank a five-burner gas range set at the end of the galley, and a large steel sink is set before a grand sash window framed by warm timber shutters.
Next to the kitchen is a comfortable dining room with a wood-burning stove and wooden floors. The window offers views of the garden.
The main living room sits at the front of the house which has a curved bay window.
The second sitting room is centered around a Georgian fireplace. This room is also home to a cozy reading nook with a colorful rug.
The first-floor landing features original wooden floorboards that add so much character to the home.
The master bedroom is a dramatic space that is completely painted in “Pitch Black” by Farrow and Ball. The exposed wooden beams and ochre yellow bedding add a warm tone to the room.
The bathroom features a freestanding bath in front of a wide tripartite casement window and a walk-in shower. The walls are painted in “Cornforth White” by Farrow and Ball.
Bordered on three sides by charming patchwork brick walls, the garden has a secluded feel.
The back facade is typical for this part of England. Maroon brickwork wraps the ground floor while the first and second-floor façades are clad in smart shiplap boarding that accentuates the medieval forms of the house.
