IKEA DAJLIEN: A New Collection For Working Out at Home
One of the most common New Year’s resolutions is to exercise more. IKEA wants to make it easy to exercise at home with the new limited edition collection DAJLIEN.
The IKEA DAJLIEN collection consists of 19 different products that support movement in everyday life and enable people to create healthy habits at home.
The starting point for the new DAJLIEN collection was the challenges and frustrations with working out at home. IKEA wanted to explore how it is possible to enable better and more accessible training sessions in the comfort of your own house.
The DAJLIEN collection was developed with the belief that it is possible to make it easier for people to exercise wherever they want and ensure that physical activity is within reach for everyone – every day. This is also reflected in the name of the collection: DAJLIEN means “daily” in Småland.
The collection is based on lessons learned from home visits in New York, Chicago, London, and Shanghai, where IKEA has shared people’s experiences with exercise at home. The results highlight the most common challenges to working out: motivation, limited space, limited time, and the discomfort many feel about working out in a gym.
At the same time, training products are perceived as bulky and can clash with home decor. The products in the DAJLIEN collection are customizable and can enable people to overcome their challenges to exercise and thus stay active.
Stylish and Practical Design Items
DAJLIEN has been inspired by the need for multifunctional solutions that fit into the home and are part exercise equipment, and part storage. Many of the products in the collection are not only exercise equipment but also stylish and practical design items.
“Not everyone feels safe or comfortable going to a gym, and at home, we often lack space and time. DAJLIEN was born from a desire to find smart solutions that address these limitations and help people create a comfortable and motivating place for exercise.
We wanted to create smart, beautiful products to inspire and redefine exercise as a fun, simple, and natural everyday activity.” Says Sarah Fager, designer at IKEA of Sweden
The products in DAJLIEN are designed with subtle colors and details, to reinforce the collection’s focus on products that blend into the home and naturally become part of the everyday environment. The collection includes a variety of products to make working out at home easier, including exercise mats, a step-up board, and a set of ring-shaped dumbbells – all designed to be easy to use, store, and take with you on the go.
Storage and Practical Coffee Table in One
The DAJLIEN bench with storage, as robust as it is versatile, is inspired by old-fashioned gym equipment and stands at the center of the collection for multifunctional design. The bench has a non-slip mat and invites you to various bodyweight exercises, while also serving as storage for your tools or as a practical coffee table at home.
Recovery – An Important Part of Training
DAJLIEN also has products for recovery and stress management, including an air purifier, yoga bands, knee pads, a massage ball, and a portable Bluetooth speaker, all in soft and soothing shades. The collection also includes slippers and two different ponchos, which can be used when relaxing after training.
“DAJLIEN is about supporting movement and helping people live a more active life at home. We have designed a collection that helps bridge the gap between home and active life. The collection shows that exercise can take many forms and that a simple workout can be done on a limited surface at home,” says Akanksha Deo, designer at IKEA of Sweden.
