A Strong Color Palette in a Unique Country House in Cornwall
Set in extensive gardens of around 1.75 acres and only minutes from the coastline stands a wonderful Victorian home that is decorated in a palette of strong colors and historic elements.
The house was designed in the late 19th century by the Cornish architect Silvanus Trevail. The Victorian home has been lovingly restored, creating a wonderful mix of old and new, a bold color palette, hand-crafted materials and textiles, and a wonderful garden with its own garden studio.
Every room in this Victorian house is unique, with its own palette of color and materials, creating rooms that have their own character.
The kitchen is probably my favorite room in the house. The room showcases impressive craftsmanship with bespoke joinery in mustard yellow and forest green, creating a colorful cottage-style kitchen look.
Set in the workbench, they added a large slate sink, echoing the slate tiles on the floor. The kitchen is modest in size, but it does come with a large pantry.
There are four main rooms on the ground floor, which are turned into two dining rooms and two sitting rooms. The emerald dining room has a wonderful fireplace and a bay window overlooking the lush garden. The curved doorway with amber-stained glass leads out to a loggia.
The largest living room is an impressive space with a black-painted ceiling and huge bay windows that connect the room to the garden.
The second dining room – or as the English call it, the breakfast room – connects to the kitchen. I can imagine that this is the room where the owners spend most of their time. It’s a wonderful, inviting room centered around a fireplace with a log burner.
The slate tiles from the kitchen continue in this room, where the joinery is painted in a warm butter-yellow shade.
The entrance hall sets the tone regarding the historic vibe and color scheme. The walls are painted with a dark charcoal hue, and the original solid floorboards run underfoot.
The Victorian staircase is built to typically classical proportions and it’s lit by beautiful stained glass arched windows.
While most rooms in this Victorian house have a dramatic color scheme, the master bedroom is a serene oasis with beige walls, floral curtains, and a charming bay window overlooking the garden.
But the dramatic colors return in the other bedrooms, where the walls are painted in deep tones. The deep windowsills allow charming window seats from which you can overlook the grounds. The solid oak floorboards add a warm and historic touch to the rooms.
The family bathroom has a cast-concrete sink, a freestanding bath, and a large walk-in shower.
The home features a loggia on the south side of the home, and from this loggia, you can enter the original billiards room with oak-paneled walls and a spectacular glass ceiling.
On the grounds also stands a garden studio that is decorated as a guest house. Unlike the rest of the home, this space is decorated in a modern style and features sliding glass doors that open to its own private terrace.
The gardens are a combination of dense woodland, lawns, and deep borders that are richly planted with perennials, mature shrubs, and flowers.
The house is listed for £1,495,000 at Inigo.
