Turn-of-the-Century Charm and Site-Built Storage in a Stockholm Apartment
This light-filled one-bedroom apartment lies on the fifth floor of a turn-of-the-century apartment building in the Södermalm area of Stockholm. Recently, the apartment was fully renovated, pairing original features with contemporary site-built elements.
When you step into the home, you’re immediately struck by the beautiful preserved turn-of-the-century charm. High ceilings, large bay windows, original joinery, stucco, wooden floorboards, and two fireplaces give the apartment character. The newer additions, like the handcrafted kitchen and the modern bathroom, pair beautifully with the historic character.

The apartment’s floor plan consists of three rooms in a row with the kitchen in the center. From the hall, you can walk into the living room or the kitchen.
The living room is wonderfully bright thanks to the huge bay window. The walls are painted in a light color by Farrow and Ball and are paired with original joinery, wooden floorboards, and a traditional fireplace in the corner.
Traditional Swedish fireplaces (a kakelugn) come in different shapes and styles. This fireplace has a beautiful marble base paired with white tiles.
Elegant double wooden doors separate the kitchen from the living room.
The kitchen is the heart of the home. The gray-green cabinets were custom-made by a carpenter who also made the wardrobes in the hall and the bedroom.
The classic kitchen cabinets are topped with a durable Swedish Ekeberg marble countertop, and the walls are painted in the color “Shadow White” by Farrow & Ball with paint that is easy to wipe and wash off.
In front of the large window, there is room for a generous dining table. I love the rustic wooden table the current owners used, it adds such a nice laid-back natural vibe to the space.
Even the space above the doorframe is fitted with cabinets and open wine storage.
The bedroom is a wonderful serene space with walls painted in a muted gray-green shade, similar to the kitchen cabinets.
This room has the same layout as the living room and also comes with a spectacular bay window that floods the room with natural light and offers views of the rooftops and the sky.
The carpenter who made the kitchen also made these corner built-in wardrobes. On the inside, they are fitted with smart storage solutions, and the pine doors are painted with linseed oil.
In the bedroom, the kakelugn has a rounded design and it also has a charming display niche.
The hall is fitted with custom wardrobes, an open shoe cabinet, and coat hooks, providing lots of storage.
The bathroom is clad in tiles made of light Ekeberg marble from Sweden. It is the same material that was used for the kitchen countertops.
The entire apartment is painted in muted, neutral shades, but the hall is the exception. The walls are painted in a vibrant blue shade by Farrow & Ball.
