A Warm Living Room in a Historic English Home
In a small town in county Essex in England stands a beautiful Victorian house with a lovely garden. The house was built in 1890 and sits in the center of town overlooking The Downs, a charming green and fishing pond.
The 2,200 sq ft house has been lovingly restored by its current owners. They added charming touches such as tongue and groove paneling as well as a new deVOL kitchen. They also stripped the doors to its original wood grain which immediately adds character to a room.
The house has several living spaces that open up to a wonderful garden with several seating areas and lush green spaces. The house also has four bedrooms and two bathrooms, making it a wonderful characterful family home.
I love the main sitting room with its wooden shutters and warm color accents in the decor. despite the gray wall color (”French Gray” by Farrow and Ball) the room is so warm thanks to the wooden accents and textiles used in the room.
The room has an ornately carved timber mantlepiece sitting around a working fireplace.
On the floor lies the house’s original wooden floorboards.
On the other side of the hall is a snug with a bay window. The room is painted in ‘Hardwick White’ by Farrow and Ball.
The hallway is painted in blue tones with ‘Hague Blue’ on the walls and other wood elements painted in ‘Railings‘, a darker blue-black.
The basement floor is home to a kitchen/dining room and a television room. The kitchen is fitted with deVOL cabinets, painted in dark blue, and a stone floor runs underfoot.
The kitchen has a beautiful white Aga which suits the historic house so well.
A sunny garden room/study sits to the rear of the house. It’s an airy space, thanks to its mono-pitch ceiling and wide, expansive glazing. It is clad in tongue and groove paneling, painted in ‘Lichen’, a calm and muted shade of green. French doors, painted in ‘Green Smoke’, open onto a raised south-west facing terrace.
On the first floor are two bedrooms and a family bathroom.
The bathroom has a freestanding bath which is surrounded by tongue and groove paneling that is painted in ‘Ball Green’.
On the top floor is another attic bedroom and a separate bathroom.
The bathroom has green tiles from Mandarin Stone lining the walls and a shower floor made of black pebbles.
A lovely garden surrounds the house on two sides, planted with a variety of ferns, bergenia, elephant’s ears, paperplants, smoke bush, acers, hostas, heucheras, hydrangeas and cherry trees.
