Striped Ceilings and Color-Blocking Walls in a Stockholm Apartment

On the ground floor of an early 20th-century apartment building in Stockholm’s chic Östermalm area lies a surprising one-bedroom apartment, decorated with a fun color palette and featuring a spacious, private patio terrace.

The apartment is located in a 1922 building that was fully renovated to a design by the well-known Swedish interior designer and stylist Lotta Agaton. But inside, it is worlds away from Agaton’s monochrome design scheme; it is packed with color, from the striped ceiling to the pink kitchen.

The 45 square meter apartment has an open-plan living room and kitchen with large windows and glass doors facing the 12 square meter patio terrace, significantly extending the living area in the warmer months.

An antique dining table stands in the center of the open-plan living space, connecting the seating area on one side and the kitchen on the other. The walls are painted in a muted blue shade, paired with a fun blue-and-white striped ceiling.

The exclusive, site-built kitchen is designed in a sleek, modern style with cabinets that reach the ceiling for an integrated look. They designed the kitchen in such a way that the cabinets extend into the wardrobes.

The apartment is packed with fun colors and patterns. The kitchen is painted in two wonderful pink shades, a little darker on the lower cabinets.

Behind the sofa, an accent wall has been created with color-blocking patterns in green, blue, and pink. A built-in bookcase in a pastel blue shade, matching the walls, offers storage space.

The deep window sills with radiator covers seamlessly run into open bookcases.

From the living space, a glass door opens into the spacious patio terrace in the courtyard with space for a lounge area and a dining table.

The terrace has been closed off from the rest of the courtyard with wooden screens.

From the living room, you move into the bedroom, which is decorated in a completely opposite color scheme from the rest of the apartment. Instead of color, the bedroom has been decorated in gray tones for a more calming sleeping experience.

The bedroom’s walls and ceiling are decorated with the “Novelette” wallpaper by Cole & Son, a beautiful cloud design by Fornasetti.

The color returns in the bathroom, where marble tiles on the floor and in the shower are paired with a dusty pink shade on the walls and ceiling.

Under the sink drawers and cabinets above the washing machine (all painted in the same pink hue for a harmonious look) provide storage space.

The entry hall is decorated in a green palette, with two shades of green on the walls and a striped green-and-white ceiling. Built-in wardrobes next to the front door provide space for coats and shoes, keeping the hall tidy.
